Strict chain-of-custody procedures are followed for all samples collected at Genex's collection facilities. A strict chain-of-custody ensures that the integrity of the sample can be maintained and traced from the moment of sample collection until the time it reaches the testing laboratory. Samples are accounted for at all times through a chain-of-custody maintained during sample handling. A chain-of-custody document accompanies the sample from the time of collection to transport to the laboratory. An internal tracking document is maintained for all samples received by the laboratory, thereby establishing the history of sample handling and analysis from the time of receipt of the sample.

Receipt and Handling of Exhibit

Casework is shipped to the laboratory in sealed, tamper-proof containers by secure transport along with chain-of-custody documents.
Upon receipt of Casework, the package is thoroughly inspected to ensure integrity of the secure packaging and seal. If tampering or damage is observed, the submitter is immediately notified and the details recorded in the Case file.
If the Casework and its packaging are intact, the exhibit(s) and known sample(s) are examined to verify that they conform to the descriptions in the Request for Analysis. Exhibits and samples are marked with the initials of the handler (Case Manager or authorized Technical Assistant), case file number, sample number(s), and the date of receipt.
All reports are delivered directly to the client.

Because each exhibit must be accounted for from the time of its discovery or collection until it is tendered in evidence at a trial, strict continuity of possession procedures are followed. Laboratory Tracking Documents follow the exhibit at all times ensuring that the exhibit is accounted for at all times. All individuals subsequently involved in care, handling or possession of exhibits must sign an Internal Tracking Document in addition to marking her/his initial and date of receipt/involvement on the exhibits or containers holding the exhibits.

Transfer of exhibits
To transfer an exhibit, an exhibit transfer form must be completed. Two copies are made; the first is placed on file, the second is attached to work notes. The exhibit is placed in a suitable container for transport and sealed. To ship an exhibit, the exhibit must be marked with the person's initials, case file number and date of transfer onto the outside of the container. A copy of the laboratory report is to be attached to the outside of the container in an envelope addressed to the contributor. The container is to be forwarded by the most appropriate means of transport which complies with court continuity requirements and other regulations.
