Special Services - Y-DNA Test (Y-Chromosome Test)

Applications of Y-DNA Test

1. Determination of relationships. In cases where a paternity test cannot be performed, the Y-Chromosome test is very useful for determining distant relationships between suspected male relatives to determine whether they are related. The Y-Chromosome is present only in males and is passed down from father to son to grandson. As a result, the Y-Chromsome test can be used to determine whether two males are related through their paternal line. The Y-Chromosome test is very useful for families to determine whether they are related along the male line in situations where a paternity test cannot be performed. For example, the Y-chromosome test can be used to test male cousins, nephews and uncles, grandfather and grandson, etc. to see if they are related along the male line. Males who have a common male ancestor will have the same Y-Chromosome.

2. Detection of male specific DNA in sex tests and crime analysis. The Y-Chromosome is present only in males and thus testing for the Y-Chromosome can detect whether a male sample is present in a forensic sample or in a mixed sample. The profile generated from the Y-Chromosome can be used to match a suspected male to see if that male is the donor of the sample.

3. DNA Genealogy (DNA Ancestry). The Y-Chromosome is passed down along the male line the same manner and pattern that the surname is passed down. As a result, the Y-Chromosome testing is a powerful tool for genealogists to trace their surname, to confirm family lineages, and to link together different lines with the same surname to see if they have a common ancestor (if two males have a common male ancestor along their paternal line, they will have the same Y-Chromosome profile). Y-Chromosome testing has become an invaluable tool for genealogists to clarify and confirm genealogical research and to allow individuals with the same surname to determine whether they are related.

Individuals Involved Only males carry the Y-Chromosome (Y-DNA)
Description The Y-Chromosome test detects the hypervariable regions within the male Y-Chromosome. The Y-Chromosome is only present in males. The Y-Chromosome is of interest to genealogists because it is passed down along the male lineage (from father to son to grandson, etc.)
