The Y-Chromosome test will enable you to identify your ethnic and geographic origin along your paternal (surname) lineage. The Y-Chromsome test will also be able to tell you whether you have Native-American, African, or Cohanim Ancestry in your lineage.

Determine Cohanim Ancestry
The Y-Chromosome test will be able to tell you if you are a descendent of the Jewish priestly Cohanim line. This test will detect your Cohanim Ancestry if your paternal line was Cohanim. Only males have a Y-Chromsome, thus the Y-Chromosome test is only applicable for males. If you are female, you may test your brother, father, cousins, uncles, etc. on your father¡¦s paternal line.

Determine Native American Ancestry
The Y-Chromosome test will tell you whether you have Native-American Ancestry along your paternal line e.g. your father's father's father's father. This test is for detecting Native American Ancestry along the paternal line only and will only work if your Native American Ancestry was strictly along the paternal line (see chart below). Only males are able to take the Y-Chromosome test. If you are female, you may want to test your brother or cousins and uncles along your paternal lineage.

The mtDNA test can be taken by both males and females. The mtDNA test will be able to tell you if you have Native American Ancestry along your maternal line (e.g. mother's mother's mother's mother, and so on). The mtDNA is passed down from the mother to her children. The father's mtDNA is not passed down. As a result, an individual's mtDNA was inherited from his/her mother who inherited from her mother and so on.
