Forensic testing is often used to match a sample to a suspect. By testing a forensic sample, a genetic identity profile is obtained. Like a fingerprint, each individual has a very unique DNA identity profile. As a result, a laboratory can test a forensic sample such as a stain, tissue, etc. and match it to the contributor of the sample.

To proceed with an identity match, it is recommended to test the forensic sample first in order to see if a genetic profile can be obtained. Once the profile is obtained, the suspect can then be tested to see if there is a match. Two forensic samples can also be tested against each other to see if they came from the same person.
