A forensic sample can be used in place of a buccal or blood sample in all DNA relationship tests, including but not limited to the following:

Paternity Test
Maternity Test
Sibship Test
Grandparentage Test
Y-Chromosome Test

Can I use a buccal swab for the child and a forensic sample for the alleged father?
Yes, you can use any combination of sample types, regardless of whether it is buccal swabs, blood, or forensic samples. DNA is the same everywhere in the body.

I will have not problems collecting a buccal swab sample from the alleged father but will have to submit a forensic hair sample for the child. Should I submit hair for both the father and the child?
No. Whenever you can collect a buccal swab or blood sample from a participant, you should always choose the buccal swab or blood sample over any other sample types. This is because buccal swabs and blood samples are not considered to be forensic samples, and thus have a much better chance of working. Furthermore, forensic samples will cost you more to process than buccal swab or blood samples.

In the event that one or more individuals cannot participate in a relationship test (e.g. paternity test), a forensic sample can be used in place of a buccal swab sample. The total cost for a relationship test will be the cost of the identity test plus $180 US for each forensic sample (for example, to conduct a paternity test with a standard swab sample from the child, but a forensic sample from the alleged father, the cost would be $205 US for the paternity test plus an extra $180 US for one forensic sample).
