Determination of Relationship

Y-Chromosome Test

The Y Chromosome test can be used to determine whether two males are related. This type of testing is very helpful for cases where a paternity test cannot be performed.

Examples of situations where Y Chromosome testing can be used to determine relationships:

1. To determine whether two brothers share the same father. In cases where the alleged father is available for testing, a paternity test can be performed to determine whether two brother share the same father. However, in the event that the father is deceased or unavailable for testing, the Y Chromosome test will be able to determine whether the two alleged brothers share the same Y Chromosome. Since the Y Chromosome is passed down from the father to all of this sons, if the two alleged brothers have the same father, they will have the same Y Chromosome.

2. To determine whether two potential male cousins are related. If the fathers of the two male cousins are brothers or related through the male lineage, then testing the two male cousins will indicate whether they share the same male forefather. If they do, they will have the same Y Chromosome profile. If the two male cousins do not share the same forefathers, they will have different Y Chromosomes.

3. To determine whether an uncle and nephew are related. If the uncle and nephew are related through the paternal line, they will have the same Y Chromosomes (e.g. if the nephew's father is the uncle's brother, and if the uncle's brother and the uncle share the same father).

4. To determine whether any two males share the same forefather along the male line (same line that the surname is passed down).

To complete this type of testing, we will need to test the males in question. In most cases, the 20 Loci DNA test is usually sufficient, but if more discriminating power is required, the 31 Loci or the 45 Loci test could be used.
