Triglycerides are the main type of fat (or lipid) found in your blood. They are made from the breakdown of dietary fats and carbohydrates. Triglycerides are an important source of energy; however, high levels of triglycerides can increase your risk of heart disease.
Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is essential for cellular function. However, high levels of cholesterol can increase your risk of cardiovascular disease.
Low-density Cholesterol (LDL)
LDL cholesterol refers to the cholesterol that is packaged within low-density lipoprotein particles. It is considered “bad” cholesterol because LDL deposits excess cholesterol in blood vessel walls, where it accumulates, leading to hardening of the arteries, atherosclerosis, and blood clots. LDL cholesterol levels are often considered the best predictor of your risk of heart disease.
High-density cholesterol (HDL)
HDL cholesterol is often considered “good” cholesterol. HDL cholesterol refers to the cholesterol packaged within high-density lipoprotein particles. HDL collects cholesterol from around the body and delivers it to the liver for recycling or removal. Elevated HDL levels are considered to offer protection from cardiovascular disease.
