Cortisol is a hormone with roles in regulating metabolism, blood pressure, blood glucose levels, response to infections and stress. It is the main stress hormone in humans and functions to reduce stress levels by influencing the flight-or-fight hormone levels.
This steroid hormone is produced and released by the pituitary gland and the adrenal gland. Cortisol levels rise and fall throughout the day, following a “diurnal” pattern. Its levels are the highest during the morning and drop off at night. Abnormal cortisol levels may be indicative of defects in adrenal or pituitary function.
Very high and very low cortisol levels are linked to Cushing’s syndrome and low cortisol levels are linked to Addison’s disease).
Symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome (high cortisol levels) include
- Obesity
- High blood pressure
- High blood sugar
- Irregular menstrual cycles in women
- Muscle weakness
- Osteoporosis
- Thin skin that is easily bruised
Symptoms of Addison’s disease (low cortisol levels) include
- Weight loss
- Low blood pressure
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fatigue
- Dark patches of skin
- Decreased sexual drive in women
As cortisol levels change during the day, it is important to take multiple samples during the day. The test kit includes supplies to take 4 different samples during the day that can be tested.
