The c-reactive protein (CRP) is released by the liver in response to inflammation, which can result from a wide range of conditions including infections, cancer and underlying inflammatory diseases. This test can be used to determine the presence of inflammation without having to identify the cause or location.
Elevated CRP levels may be indicative of an active infection, such as a bacterial infection or a flare-up associated with a long-term inflammatory disease.
Serum CRP levels indicate the presence of inflammation without the need to identify the location or the source of inflammation. It is useful for
- Detecting bacterial infections
- Diagnosing fungal or viral infections
- Identifying underlying inflammatory diseases
- Detecting the effectiveness of a treatment used for an inflammatory disease
- Assessing the risk of heart disease
- Assessing the risk of inflammatory autoimmune diseases
This test allows you to monitor the presence of both short-term and long-term inflammation in your body from the privacy of your own home. It is useful for detecting and monitoring bacterial infections as well as monitoring flareups associated with inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, lupus and inflammatory bowel disease.
