Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that results from an inability to control blood sugar levels. Glucose is the primary source of sugar in our bodies. This test measures glycated hemoglobin or Hb1Ac, which is indicative of long-term blood sugar levels.
Hemoglobin is a protein found in red blood cells responsible for transporting oxygen. It can be bound by glucose to produce glycated hemoglobin or Hb1Ac.
As the lifespan of a red blood cells is around 3 months, detecting the levels of Hb1Ac can give an indication of blood sugar levels in this timeframe.
You should consider this test if you are
- Overweight or obesity
- Has a family history of type 2 diabetes
- Suffer from high blood pressure
- Have altered lipid levels (low HDL and high triglycerides)
- Live a sedentary lifestyle
Prevention is key to curbing diabetes. Make the choice to monitor your blood sugar levels regularly, so you can stay healthy.
Symptoms associated with diabetes include:
- Increased thirst
- Frequent urination
- Unexplained weight loss
- Blurred vision
- Feeling hungry even immediately after a meal
- Wounds or sores that are slow to heal
- Frequent infections
If you are feeling any of the above symptoms, you may benefit from measuring your glycated hemoglobin levels to uncover your risk of pre-diabetes with this test.
