Ferritin
Ferritin is a protein that contains iron. Its levels are indicative of your iron stores. High ferritin levels may mean your body is absorbing and storing too much iron, while low levels may mean you are at risk of iron deficiency.
Transferrin
Transferrin is a protein produced by the liver that is necessary to transport iron into cells. When iron stores are low, more transferrin is produced to increase iron intake. High transferrin levels may be indicative of iron deficiency.
TIBC
Total iron binding capacity (TIBC) is a measure of the total capacity of your blood to bind and transport iron. It accounts for the amount of transferrin in your blood that is available to bind iron.
Both iron deficiency and iron overload can have a negative impact on your health. Iron deficiency can lead to anemia, symptoms of which includes:
- Fatigue
- Pale skin
- Headaches
- Shortness of breath or fast heartbeat during strenuous activities
- Irritability
While iron overload can cause organ damage.
Hemochromatosis is a disorder caused by iron overload. Early symptoms of hemochromatosis include:
- Fatigue and weakness
- Memory problems
- Depression
- Shortness of breath
- High blood sugar
- Low thyroid function
- Knuckle pain (“iron fist”)

Please ensure that the sample is collected before 9am and returned immediately using the carrier method provided within the test kit. Each test includes a prepaid shipping envelope to return your samples to the laboratory.
Please do not collect or return samples on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
