Testosterone is the primary sex hormone in men. Produced by the testes it is responsible for the development of secondary sexual characteristics in men.
Testosterone in your blood is transported bound to the sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and albumin. Only about 4% of testosterone circulates free. The albumin-bound and free fractions of testosterone represent the active form of testosterone. Simply measuring total testosterone levels may not give an accurate diagnosis if SHBG levels are abnormal. SHGB levels can be used to detect low testosterone levels in men and excessive testosterone production in women.
Testosterone is produced in both men and woman. Abnormal levels can result in
- Delayed or early puberty in boys
- Erectile dysfunction
- Decreased sex drive
- Testicular tumors
- Hypothalamus or pituitary disorders
This test detects your levels of testosterone and SHBG to provide you with your free androgen index, which can be indicative of androgen deficiency. Low testosterone levels can lead to infertility in men. Uncover whether testosterone may be behind your fertility issues with this test.
