Anti-Mullarian hormone (AMH) is important fertility. It is produced by the follicles, the sac that contains the eggs. Levels of AMH is indictive of follicular growth, thus is useful for determining the remaining egg maturation potential (ovarian reserve) of a woman.
Every woman is born with around one million eggs (oocytes), which is reduced to around 500, 000 eggs by the end of childhood. Only a fraction of these eggs will mature and be released, as part of the menstrual cycle each month. AMH level declines over the lifetime of a woman and is usually undetectable after menopause.
AMH levels are useful for predicting fertility status and for predicting the onset of menopause. It can also be indicative of reproductive issues such as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), where too many follicles mature each month, but no eggs are released. The excess follicles produce large amounts of AMH.
AMH levels can also be used to
- Predict the likelihood of success involving in vitro fertilization
- Diagnose premature ovarian failure
- Assess the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS)
AMH levels do not fluctuate during the menstrual cycle. As such, samples can be obtained anytime. Please ensure the samples are taken first thing in the morning and are returned to the lab the same day.
