Luteinizing hormone (LH)
LH is released by the pituitary gland and plays a role in ovulation, or the release of a mature egg from the ovary. Levels of LH peak mid menstrual cycle and triggers the release of the egg as well as the development of the corpus luteum, which goes on to produce progesterone necessary to maintain a pregnancy. Low LH levels may make it difficult to conceive, while high LH levels may be indicative of menopause.
Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
FSH stimulates the development of the follicle (which houses the egg) during the first half of the menstrual cycle. Then mid cycle, FSH together with LH stimulates the release of one mature egg during ovulation. Imbalances in FSH levels may affect fertility.
Estradiol
Estradiol is the main female sex hormone, with roles in egg production, cholesterol regulation and protection from bone loss. Alterations in estradiol levels can affect fertility as it leads to irregular menstrual cycles, low sex drive, sleep issues, anxiety and fatigue. Estradiol levels decrease with age and low levels can be a sign of menopause.
